In a new line-up with Astacat (ex-Zoppo)
on lead vocals and Jason Langdon as an extra guitar player, Violent
Elegance is the third full-length of this three girls and two boys band
from the Bulb fields area in The Netherlands. Coming from a background of being influenced by American guitar noise bands (Dinosaur Jr,. Sonic Youth, Pixies,Yo La Tengo), they nowadays incorporate British influences (Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, 4AD-sound) into their music which leads to a rarely heard combination of a both intense and lush sound. Guitars are sometimes rude and destructive, but mostly played in a delicate and slightly wringing repetitive way, while the girl vocals are Ice queen-ish attractive and sensual, but with a distance (the look-but-dont-touch idea). | Based on a slowly-groovy swing Violent Elegance expresses sometimes mysteriously, but mainly explicitly the many sides of the rough and the smooth. |

Played on 'Ish' their influences (the heavy melancholy
of bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth) still the first fiddle, after three years of
gigging (a.o. support-acts to Heather Nova and Swell) Seesaw has managed to transform
these influences and integrate them into their very own, more pop-orientated
style.
The songs have a concrete form. Defined, clear-cut, direct. The loud parts are heavy in their climaxes while the quiet songs are bare and shameless in their emotional directness. In some songs the dynamic changes are sudden while others have a smooth build-up. The duo (sometimes trio) singing adds a light dreamy and psychedelic sphere to the songs. The subtle use of extra instruments like organ, xylophone, cello and octagan adds almost hidden lightness. The combination of noisy melancholy, tensed and rapturous melodies, poppy lightness and sincere singing makes 'Gold & Money' a fresh, charming, passionate and enthusiastic poprecord. |
