“Welsh art-popsters MELYS” (NME)- began life in 1997 releasing their debut E.P. “Fragile” through Ankst records. This was closely followed by the “Cuckoo” single, both being very well received by the major music press. The band all live together in a rambling country mansion in the Victorian honeymoon village of Betws-y-Coed in the Snowdonia national Park, North Wales.
Guitarist Paul met singer Andrea at a set of traffic lights on a warm summers day, whilst waiting for a buss-load of pink-haired grannies to cross the road. The windows were down and Paul heard Andrea singing. He was so impressed, He leaned out of the window and asked her to sing on some demos he had made. The rest is history.

After only their 5th gig, Melys signed a 5 album Major deal with Pinnacle records. The product of this was their debut album “Rumours and Curses” which followed their 3 singles “Diwifr,” “Lemming,” and “Ambulance Chaser”.
Melys have recorded 6 sessions for John Peel and represented Radio One at this years Eurosonic festival in the Netherlands as his guests. They receive regular radio plays with Steve Lamacq’s evening session and Mark Radcliffe as well as MTV video plays. After the collapse of PINNACLE the band set up their own Recording studio and Label. Their first release on their own Sylem label was the “Baby Tornado” single, it charted in the UK indie top 20 as did the labels second release by Melys, the “Slagging Off Tourists” E.P. Melys’ 2nd album, “Kamikaze” gained the band excellent reviews (Melody Maker: 4 Stars/5) worldwide and has had to be re-pressed 3 times due to demand. The bands single “Un Darllenwr Lwcus” was released late October 2000 and completely sold out in the first week with the band making 500 furry single covers for the vinyl copies, apparently going through 3 sewing machines in the process. MELYS have been tipped by Q magazine as ones to watch and were nominated in Best Single (Un Darllenwr Lwcus) and Best LIVE band at the Rock and Pop awards 2000 in their country of Wales. T

The band have toured the Netherlands and UK  promoting a split vinyl release with Dutch band Seedling after being introduced to each other by John Peel whilst in Holland. “I Don’t believe in you” and Seedlings “Cool baby my hips go Woo” was out 14th May 2001.
The single Chinese Whispers was released November 2001 and got rave reviews (see press quotes section, below). It was voted by the listeners of John Peel as finest tune of 2001 (No. 1 in the Festive Fifty

The Melys album Suikerspin, containing their two 2001 singles  I dont believe in you  and Chinese whispers and tracks of mostly sold out singles and eps, is released on February 18, 2002. True nuggets of five years Melys.
